Rawr is a series of sculptures by Oakland artist Joyce Hsu. Tall tales and fantasies help us learn and mature into adults, though somewhere along the way, we sacrifice our imagination and belief in magic.
About these Sculptures
With her eclectic and mesmerizing sculptures, Hsu tries to recapture that precious thing that we lost when we left childhood behind. She reminds us to keep our imagination and our sense of fun and play.
T-Rex, part robot and part secret, interactive fort, invites youngsters to let their imaginations run wild.
Dino Bench includes a toy periscope and provides a resting spot for the whole family.
Around the corner to the east, you can discover Hummingbirds in progressive stages of motion, situated within the planters along the path. These sculptures are another example of Hsu’s playful work; the hummingbird is the smallest living descendant of dinosaurs.
The next time you are in the Walnut Creek Library, step into the children’s wing to enjoy more work by Joyce Hsu. Her inventive installations reveal her unique and magical view of the world.
