About the Artists
Ludell Deutscher was born in Berkeley and educated at Mills College. A Lafayette resident who died in 2013, she taught in and coordinated Walnut Creek’s Civic Arts Education (now Center for Community Arts) ceramics program for many years. Her style is typical of the Bay Area clay movement of the 1960s-1980s. It’s characterized by slips and glazes that provide earth-toned hues and textures.
Deutscher maintained a studio in Benicia at the former Yuba Manufacturing complex where Howitzer cannons were made during World War II. She was a part of that city’s lively art scene. Later feminist themes, especially from Judy Chicago, influenced her. Chicago maintained a Benicia studio during the 1980s. Deutscher also enjoyed painting and writing poetry and short stories.
Location: At the entrance of Walnut Creek City Hall on Main Street, Walnut Creek, CA
Please note that Deutscher and De Stabler are available for viewing during City Hall hours of Monday - Friday from 8 am - 5 pm.
