About this Mural

McKie’s Fish Benches were created using the lost wax process – a method of casting metal. During this process, the artist forms a mold using wax that will eventually be heated and drained, then filled with bronze.

About the Artist

Born in Boston in 1944, McKie graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design. The daughter of artists, she is a self-taught furniture maker with a fine understanding of organic forms and connecting parts. She maintains a studio in Medford, MA. Her work can be found in several museums and public collections, including the Vice President’s residence in Washington, D.C.

McKie often creates sculpture that is functional. She carves environmental and animal imagery into marble, and various species of wood, and she may cast them into bronze. She brings her exotic creatures to life by exploring the balance between shape and
texture. The contours of each piece evoke images of grace, power,
and vigor.
