About the Sculpture

Like a geometric puzzle, Fletcher Benton's Folded Alphabet sculptures contain a letter, sometimes hidden and sometimes obvious. Walk around the painted aluminum piece. This is important for all sculpture, but particularly for Benton’s work.

His Folded Alphabet Series incorporate the letters within basic forms like circles and triangles. The metal plates perch atop one another, challenging gravity and defying balance. The surface of this piece, painted to look like weathering Cor-Ten steel, was originally a vibrant blue and then black.

About the Artist

As a young man, the Ohio-born sculptor supported himself as a sign painter. Benton became fascinated with the alphabet and geometric forms created by letters. Find another Benton sculpture at Bishop Ranch office park in San Ramon. You can see the sculpture, Folded Circle, Two Rings, from Interstate 680.
