About

Derived from the French verb coller, meaning to glue/stick, collage refers to both the method and art form in which paper and other media are arranged and affixed to a surface. Though the first evidence of collage coincided with the invention of paper in China around 200 BC, it was not until the early 20th century that artists first used it as a technique. Collage has since evolved into a popular and powerful medium that transcends traditional artistic boundaries. Versatile and accessible, collage allows for a creative amalgamation of 2- and 3-D materials, creating a fascinating visual interplay of textures, colors, and forms that explore the juxtaposition of seemingly disparate elements. From analog cut-and-paste to digital layering, this exhibition celebrates the deft use of materials and creative spirit of collage.

Jurors are Rangsook Yoon, Ph.D., Senior Curator at the Sarasota Art Museum and Kimberley Acebo Arteche, Co-Executive Director at Berkeley Art Center.
